Monday saw a failed attempt by Council members at the City of Skopje to debate the Drisla, Vardariste, and Trubarevo fires because neither Mayor Danela Arsovska nor representatives of the City’s administration were present.
The Council’s President, Straso Angelovski, stated that it was humiliating for the capital’s authorities to ignore pollution topics.
The items concerning the fires and pollution had been proposed by part of independent Council members. In their view, the situation may soon repeat itself, which is why the so-called zero waste concept should be used as a solution.
“By putting the garbage under dirt, the garbage pollutes the soil, water, air, and, this, the food we eat. So, we cannot continue pushing the garbage under dirt and think we will function normally, as a society, and that we will leave behind normal dirt, air, water, for future generations”, Green Humane City’s Dragana Velkovska said.
Though she didn’t attend the session, Arsovska voiced a stand on social media, stating that she had no competences regarding the Trubarevo and Vardariste landfills, adding that there hadn’t been waste incineration at Drisla for three years. She also levelled criticism at VMRO-DPMNE’s Skopje mayoral candidate, Orce Gjorgjievski, and Interior Minister Pance Toskovski.
“Regarding the pyromaniacs, call Pance Toskovski, and, instead of you taking photos of you “jogging” in the Park just for the campaign, it wouldn’t be bad, for a change, if you told him to try to catch some of the perpetrators”, she noted.
