Nine EU member-states addressed a letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell in which they demand reintroduction of discussions concerning the integration of the Western Balkan countries in the EU at the upcoming meeting of EU Foreign Ministers that is to take place this April. In the letter dating back to 5 March 2021, Foreign Ministers of Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia state that it is high time for EU to take a strategic look at the Western Balkans. “A lot has changed since the last enlargement discussion in August 2019. There have been dynamic internal political developments in the countries of the region. While the EU has mobilised massive amounts of support to the region, other actors were more effective in presenting their support and thus undermining our reliability, credibility and perception of our solidarity. We need to discuss how to respond to the internal development on the ground and to the more active engagement of the third actors,” the letter writes.
