Amadeus Group Suing North Macedonia in Washington

An Albania-based company is suing North Macedonia before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington, seeking 110 million dollars in compensation. “It’s about Amadeus Group, owned by Besim Elshani and Elisabeth Gjoni. The basis of the dispute is the construction of a hotel and trade centre in the centre of Skopje. According to the lawsuit, the project has been halted, while the company is seeking 110 million euros,” Shqiptarja com reports, citing Oligarkia.al. The same source says that in 2014, the government in Skopje started an aggressive programme to renew the capital with buildings in classical baroque style to highlight the country’s history. “The programme cost at least 650 million euros from the state budget, while private companies were oriented to build in line with this style. The same year, Amadeus Gorup, through a contract, bought a land parcel in the centre of Skopje from the government of North Macedonia, where it needed to build a 16-metre-tall baroque-style hotel, but obviously, the sides have failed to carry out the projects due to disputes,” it is added.
