The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official reaction to the results of the 2021 Population Census in North Macedonia, in which they express surprise from the results. “We could not help but notice the major difference of only around 3,500 enumerated citizens of Bulgarian ethnicity, compared to the data we possess about over 100,000 citizens of North Macedonia that have acquired Bulgarian passports, which can only be acquired only with written proof of Bulgarian ethnicity of the individuals, or them having Bulgarian ancestors. Hence, with great dose of attention we take the doubts expressed by third parties about the credibility of the results of this Census, especially if we have in mind the fact that 7.2% of the population have been enumerated with previously acquired data from institutions of the state,” writes the reaction of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.
