According to the EU’s Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, the consequences of France’s negative stand can be disastrous for both the two countries and the region. In his view, the announced early elections in Macedonia show how sensitive the internal-political situation in countries from the region is. Hahn said in an interview with Austrian agency APA that after the EU leaders’ negative decision, the question was being raised whether it was about a lasting veto from France about enlargement. As the Commissioner assessed, it’s obvious that France currently doesn’t want any enlargement. He considers that the annnoumcenets that the issue will once again be considered during the Croatian Presidency is a “never-ending story” .The EPP Group at the European Parliament, too, criticised the decision to block negotiations with Macedonia and Albania, describing it as a strategic mistake. It said in a tweet that it stressed the role and the responsibility of French President Emmanuel Macron “on the rejection and its damaging impact on the credibility of the EU.” PM Zoran Zaev, too, expressed gratitude for the resolution. “Our place is in the European family,” he said.
