EU Commissioner Varhelyi Visits Bulgaria on Topic of Veto

Bulgaria expects effective actions from the institutions of the European Union to valorise the values ​​of democracy and respect for human rights in the country. This was stated by the President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev, during a meeting with EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi, the press service of the Bulgarian President informs. At the meeting with Varhelyi, Radev stressed that the declarations and promises in the dialogue with North Macedonia no longer work and Bulgaria expects clear legally binding decisions that will lead to sustainable and irreversible results, said the correspondent from Sofia. According to Radev, this will accelerate the process of European integration for the country. Progress in the Western Balkans’ European integration process was also the focus of the talks. “Bulgaria is most interested in seeing its neighbours in the European Union, but that requires full compliance with the Copenhagen criteria for North Macedonia’s membership, especially respect for human rights and the principles of good neighbourliness, which are the basis of European cooperation,” he said.
