Genchovska: Petkov Promised Varhelyi to Lift Veto in February

Bulgarian PM Kiril Petkov promised to Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi as early as February that he would have lifted the Skopje veto by the end of June, according to Bulgaria’s resigning Foreign Minister, Teodora Genchovska. In Parliament in Sofia on Wednesday, she also revealed that Petkov, through his Foreign Policy Advisor, had tried to revise and soften Bulgaria’s framework position regarding Skopje which had included, as she stated, neither the Bulgarian stand on the Macedonian language nor a clear mechanism to implement the 2017 Treaty. Petkov himself said regardless of the type of proposal that would arise from the EU but was not in line with the national position, it would be forwarded to the Bulgarian Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Policy.
