The citizens of North Macedonia welcomed 2022 with traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations all over the country. Unlike the previous year, citizens were able to gather in restaurants, cafés or at public squares due to the more relaxed anti-COVID-19 measures, and celebrate the start of the new year. According to Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski, the New Year’s Eve celebration around the country went on peacefully, without any major criminal acts or victims. “On the night between 31 December 2021 and 1 January 2022, the Interior Ministry registered 18 cases of violation of the public order and peace, and 12 persons were arrested, in general for physical incidents and fights. During this night we also registered seven car accidents, but fortunately only with material damage, without victims or injured people,” Spasovski informed. Health Minister Venko Filipce on the other hand, visited the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic at the Mother Teresa Clinic Centre, where the first baby in the new year in North Macedonia was born. “A healthy baby boy was born one minute after midnight on 1 January 2022. The second baby, which was born only one minute after the first one is a girl, and around 05:00 a.m. another baby was born, this time at the COVID-19 department of the clinic, since its mother is a COVID-19 infected patient,” Filipce informed.
