Lavrov: NATO cannot bring Security to Balkans and Europe

The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov believes that the integration of Macedonia and Montenegro in NATO will affect the security in the Balkan region in a negative way. “The two countries will now be forced to allow the construction and installation of US military objects on their territories, and to purchase US-made weapons. No one can benefit from a military structure such as NATO. They will be forced to spend more on military and weapons, and still it will bring no peace to Europe whatsoever,” Lavrov said in an interview for the Russian newspaper “Moskovsky Kosmolets”, adding that even though Russia recognised the country under the name “North Macedonia”, the name change was conducted with violation of the Constitution and ignoring of the results of the referendum held in Macedonia on 30 September 2018.
