NGOs Debate Judicial Situation

Tuesday saw NGOs debate the judicial situation. As the All for Fair Trials Coalition said, there is a choice, that is, either the Judicial Council continuing to function as an illegitimate body with decisions that bring distrust or the state, through a special law, factually ending the term of its members. According to the NGO sector, there can be a vetting process within the Council to isolate unwelcome judges, prosecutors, lawyers, or members of court bodies without integrity. The Helsinki Committee’s stand is that though legal regulations have been adopted to reduce the influence on judges, rarely are there responsible and professional stakeholders that need to enforce the law without political pressures. NGO representatives added that judges should be encouraged to publicly say which persons try to influence their work. Problems have been accumulating for years, but there can be an independent judiciary if steps are taken right away, it was concluded at the debate.
