Pendarovski calls for Macedonia to be Given chance to show it’s Ready

In an interview with Austrian newspaper Die Presse, President Stevo Pendarovski says that he expects an EU decision because Macedonia has delivered on everything over the past 18 months. “We even changed our name after the historic deal with Greece. No candidate country had even done that. Considering the EU says that the membership process is founded on results, we then expect neither more nor less than what we’ve achieved. My message is: Give us a chance and allow us to show we’re ready,” he points out. In his view, if negotiations are prolonged, the EU will then lose a lot of its credibility and the enthusiasm about the organisation in Macedonia will see a significant drop. According to the Deputy PM for European Affairs, Bujar Osmani, regardless of whether the decision will be made on Tuesday or Wednesday and whether it will be positive or negative, “to us, the sun will still rise in the West”. On Tuesday, FM Nikola Dimitrov continued his activities in Brussels. During his participation in the meeting of Ministers of Member States that are part of the PES, he once again talked about why Macedonia, as he said, has deserved a date.  The same day, in a video message on social media, Albanian PM Edi Rama talked about the EU countries’ decision on whether or not a date should be given for his country. According to him, Germany, which leads the countries that are in favour, has chosen a different path than most Member States. He predicts a negative decision by French President Emmanuel Macron on his country. As Rama added, Macron isn’t ready to move forward the negotiations for the Western Balkans further without previously exerting pressure for reforms in the EU. The Albanian PM considers that that approach is conceptually incompatible with the consensual one leading towards those that are in favour, but that is not against Albania and Macedonia or the Western Balkans as a whole.
