During the UN General Assembly in New York, PM Zoran Zaev met Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Zaev said Macedonia’s Government was maximally focused on a constructive approach in building a mutual partnership founded on friendship and joint interest for a prosperous region in the interest of both Skopje and Athens. According to him, the Government is ready to intensify and enrich cooperation between the two countries, as provided for in the Prespa Agreement. The PM described the document as a historic step and a significant deal to build good-neighbourliness, closer cooperation and constructive and positive relations between the two countries. The PM added that it was worthy of respect that Greece had been the first NATO country that had ratified its northern neighbour’s Accession Protocol in the procedure for full-fledged membership that would be finalised soon. Also, the PM informed Mitsotakis about the efforts to strengthen the implementation of current reforms in order for room to be opened for a start of EU membership negotiations. A positive decision is expected on that in October, Macedonia’s Government stated in the press-release. Clear support was expressed by Mitsotakis about opening negotiations with the EU and it was highlighted that the consistent and timely implementation of the Prespa deal was key in terms of promoting relations and ensuring Skopje’s European perspective.
