Schieder Suggests Foreign Historians Help Skopje and Sofia Dispute

Bulgaria and North Macedonia should turn to the future instead of the past, and historical issues should be left to historians – was the main messages from European Parliament’s standing rapporteur for North Macedonia Ilhan Kyuchyuk and Chair of Parliament’s delegation to the EU-North Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee Andreas Schieder at Wednesday’s online press briefing. The two expressed hope that the dialogue between the two countries would continue, and Schieder went a step further by proposing that foreign historians be involved to resolve the history disputes between Skopje and Sofia. “I also have a suggestion, if the joint commission from the good neighbourly agreement does not work or if its work remains stuck due to political processes, maybe we should find two or three eminent European historians who will lead the real historical debate without any internal political interference,” proposed MEP Schieder.
