Asked on Thursday why the Zagreb Summit had focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, not on enlargement, Defence Minister Radmila Sekerinska said Macedonia expected membership negotiations to start in 2020. She added that five or 10 years ago, a summit at which the word “enlargement” would be mentioned would have been important to the country. “Now, the word “enlargement” and the words “accession negotiations” are already part of the EU’s conclusions. There were people who claimed, especially from the opposition, that there was no chance of North Macedonia starting negotiations this year, but the EU has shown that in the most difficult times, when the epidemic has become the number one problem in the world, it has managed to reach full consensus and make a decision on a start of negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania,” Sekerinska explained.
