The MP group of VMRO-DPMNE in the Parliament of Macedonia has submitted amendments to the Draft-law on Languages, after the Venice Commission recommended that the law text should undergo some changes. “In its report, the Venice Commissions clearly states that the text of the Draft-law on Languages breaches the European Charter on regional and minority languages. This means that the segments covered by this law are not in accordance with the European practices, and as we all know, this law was adopted with a European flag on it,” said VMRO-DPMNE MP Dragan Danev after announcing that VMRO-DPMNE will file the amendments. From SDSM they did not comment on the amendments, saying that they are yet to read them. The Speaker of the Macedonian Parliament Talat Xhaferi said that he is not optimistic about the amendments of VMRO-DPMNE. “They have the legal right to file those amendments, but having in mind that for the adoption of these amendments, and of course this law, the Parliament needs a Badinter majority, i.e. support from all ethnic communities in the Parliament. Henceforth, I do not believe that the MPS from the Albanian parties will support the amendments of VMRO-DPMNE,” Xhaferi said.
