The Steering Committee held on Wednesday a session over the wildfire situation. A decision was made to make a recommendation to the Government for the NATO mechanism to be activated. Crisis Management Centre Director Stojance Angelov said on Wednesday that though it basically offered the same things as the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism, through it, North Macedonia would be able to request assistance in the form of experienced fire-fighters.
According to him, the situation at a national level is difficult, but not alarming. Angelov said at around 7 pm that there were 10 active wildfires. The man from the Radovis region arrested in one fire case has confessed that he started the fires, while several other persons have been arrested on suspicions related to fire cases. Assistance for North Macedonia will arrive from Hungary. However, in the post on X about the assistance, Hungarian Government Spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs used “North Macedonian”.
