Zaharieva Comments on Latest Developments in Skopje-Sofia Relations

Skopje should recognise history, while Bulgaria should recognise the current reality. This is the message sent by Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva. Asked whether a Bulgarian veto is possible due to the issues concerning the language and history, she says that is not an interest of the country. As the Bulgarian Minister explains, her country’s interest is Macedonia being in the EU, “stopping the practices from Tito’s Yugoslavia”, and recognising history. “At the same time, we should recognise reality at this moment. That’s a mutual interest, in my view,” the Bulgarian politician points out. According to her, Bulgaria employs a wise foreign policy and will not allow to be used in the western neighbour’s pre-election campaign.
