As many as 313 amendments have been submitted to the draft-text of the EP’s Rapporteur on North Macedonia, Thomas Waitz.
The majority of them have been filed by Bulgarian and Greek MEPs. According to Waitz’s text, the accession process of North Macedonia has seen blockades for various unjustified reasons, while the EU should find guarantees that there will be no bilateral issues following the constitutional changes.
As he adds, North Macedonia needs to adopt the constitutional changes so that accession negotiations can start swiftly. However, Bulgarian MEP Ivaylo Valchev, who’s a member of There Is Such a People, has filed an amendment asking that it be highlighted that the accession process is blocked due to North Macedonia’s political leadership’s “unfriendly rhetoric”.
In the amendment, he is critical of North Macedonia’s decision to abstain when it comes to the EU’s resolution on Ukraine and cosponsor the US one, saying it indicates “an unexpected and regretful” change with regards to the alignment of its foreign policy.
Greek right-wing MEPs, on their part, are asking for the word “Skopje” to be used instead of “Republic of North Macedonia”, while their French counterparts, from Marine Le Pen’s party, have presented stands that the EP should stop enlargement.
