Activists Challenge Constitutionality of Election Code Changes Made in March

On Thursday, activists from six civil society organisations and initiatives, including Green Institute, Chance for Centar, and Independents For Karpos, represented by Sonja Petruseva’s law firm, filed before the Constitutional Court an initiative to challenge the constitutionality and legality of two Election Code articles concerning conditions to submit independent lists for councillors, mayors, and MPs.

According to the activists, the articles, introduced in March of this year, are in violation of four articles of the Constitution. As they added, since the adoption, the situation regarding independent lists and independent initiatives has significantly deteriorated because the collected signatures threshold as a condition to submit a list has been raised a lot.

It was added that the changes had been made to benefit parties, at the expense of civil society organisations and initiatives.
