Though there are hydrants and fire-fighting equipment in all schools in the country, in some of them, there were no regular checks or maintenance, despite the obligation by schools to do so once a year. That was most often the case in the interior of the country.
“It should also be checked whether the hoses for the hydrants are at the proper location and whether they work. That’s now underway”, Education Minister Vesna Janevska said on Thursday.
There will also be trainings for students on how to act in crisis situations. Authorities are adamant that schools are safe. The Association of Local Self-Government Units will get committed to there being mandatory school controls at least once a year instead of that being left to the good will of mayors or services.
Hydrants at residential buildings, too, are being checked. Most often, there are issues in older ones. The Association’s head, Orce Gjorgjievski, stated that most often, the problems were related to them not having hoses in hydrants.
“It’s been ordered by our services, in cooperation with the Protection and Rescue Directorate, for there to be action very soon”, he noted.
