Asked about the new visit of PM Hristijan Mickoski to Washington, on Friday, EU Ambassador Michalis Rokas stated that Washington was a close partner of Brussels, adding that if the former was ready to contribute in some way to the acceleration of the EU path of candidates, that was welcome.
The Ambassador, however, stated that the EU would have to respond to the strengthening of the far right and such narratives in both members and candidates, including North Macedonia, since the start of Donald Trump’s second as US President.
As far as the issue of USAID is concerned, EU Ambassador Rokas said that, if necessary, the EU had the will to support projects related to the rule of law, fight against corruption, and freedom of speech if the Agency withdrew its funds for that.
However, Ambassador Rokas stressed that that would be done under strict EU criteria.
