At the World Economic Forum debate headlined “Enlarge to Prosper: Will Europe Grow?”, Commissioner Marta Kos again said enlargement was a merit-based process.
As she pointed out, when it comes to comments that Western Balkan countries have waited for so long to join the EU, it’s not about how long the wait has lasted, but rather it’s a matter of their political will and how much they’re in a position to deliver.
The EU carefully follows, the Enlargement Commissioner stressed, what goes on in candidate countries, which, generally speaking, have an obligation to meet certain conditions according to the take-it-or-leave-it principle. Furthermore, Commissioner Kos underlined the importance of the rule of law in aspirant countries.
