A great fire started at the Drisla Landfill outside of Skopje on Tuesday evening, prompting intervention by the Protection and Rescue Directorate (DZS) and the Skopje firefighting brigade.
“We have created so-called anti-fire belts in order to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby grass fields and other vegetation. Firefighters are investing super-human efforts to put the fire out. We suspect that this fire may have been caused by human factor”, said DZS Director Stojance Angelov.
He added that the process for extinguishing fires in landfills is rather complex, due to the ongoing chemical processes that may release combustible gases.
