The police operation concerning healthcare concluded on Thursday with the arrest of eight individuals, including former directors of the Health Insurance Fund and officials from the Sante Plus private hospital. During searches across ten locations in three cities, physical evidence was seized, including 50,000 euros in cash and mobile phones.
The Interior Ministry stated that an organized criminal group had been dismantled whose members were suspected of charging patients privately for eye surgeries even though the services had been covered by the Fund. The operation, led by the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption, began on Wednesday morning.
According to unofficial information, among those encompassed by the investigation is former Health Insurance Fund Director Den Donchev, cited as the prime suspect in the case. Initial information indicates that damage to the Fund’s budget stands at around 1.5 million euros, while the unlawful profit of the private hospital is estimated at around four million euros, TV21 reported.
