EU: Enlargement Remains Strategic Interest

EU leaders have sent the message that enlargement and internal reforms in candidate countries should be simultaneous processes.

“Recalling the Granada Declaration, the European Council took stock of preparations for enlargement and internal reforms recalling that work on both tracks needs to advance in parallel to ensure that both future Member States and the EU are ready at the time of accession. The European Council will address internal reforms at an upcoming meeting with a view to adopting by summer 2024 conclusions on a roadmap for future work,” it is said regarding enlargement in the conclusions adopted by the European Council at the 21-22 March meeting.

After EU leaders had agreed on opening membership talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EU said enlargement remained a strategic interest.
