Fatmata Case: Police Officer Markov Acquitted

On Thursday, police officer Igor Markov was acquitted in the case concerning last year’s death of 23-year-old Fatmata, the migrant from Sierra Leone.

The officer had been charged with grave crimes against general safety.

Fatmata’s husband said he was disappointed. Gligorie Kjatoski, who represents the damaged parties, stressed that he hoped the Prosecutor’s Office would appeal the verdict.

The incident took place on 19 April 2023 near Gevgelija. According to the Court, during a raid to stop smuggling of migrants, officers spotted two smugglers and multiple migrants. One of the officers pulled out his gun and shouted at them to stop moving.

One of the smugglers tried to take away his gun, which was followed by a struggle, during which the gun went off and the bullet hit Fatmata.
