Foreign Ministry Says It Has Supported Joint Statement on Georgia Situation

On Wednesday, North Macedonia’s Foreign Ministry said it had supported the joint statement, made by Lithuania on behalf of the two and 35 other countries, on the situation in Georgia.

“We echo the concern expressed by the High Commissioner in his global update regarding recent developments in Georgia, and particularly the adoption of the so-called “transparency of foreign influence” law.  This law poses a serious threat to civil society, human rights and the rule of law in Georgia. The law is intended to have a chilling effect on the work of media outlets, human rights defenders, and civil society organisations, with the aim of silencing their voices,” it is said, inter alia, in the statement.

Among the co-sponsors of the statement are also the United States, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
