Government and Opposition Expectedly Divided over Latest Corruption Perceptions Index

On Tuesday, commenting on the 12-position drop of North Macedonia in the latest global Corruption Perceptions Index, PM Hristijan Mickoski said it was not a surprise, adding that it was a result of the work by the previous government.

The cabinet will consider the report in detail, he noted, stressing that the fight against corruption remained one of the priorities.

His party, VMRO-DPMNE, too, said the drop proved that “crime” had been the main activity of SDSM during the latter’s time in power.

“The report covers just 3 months of the VMRO-DPMNE-led government’s term”, it said.

On the other hand, the now opposition party stated that the report was yet another proof of the new government’s “incompetence and failure”. As SDSM added, the report represents the first backsliding of the country when it comes to the Index since 2019.
