Indictment Proposal against 36 in Syndrome Case

The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecution of Organised Crime and Corruption has filed an indictment proposal against 36 persons in relation to the Custodial Care and Disability Insurance (aka Syndrome) case.

According to the Office, the people got organised into two criminal groups that would, during 2023 and until 2024, serve as intermediaries and unlawfully enable rights to custodial care and disability insurance to be acquired in exchange for money. Services cost 150-5,000 euros, according to suspicions.

The groups’ organisers and members, including doctors, a lawyer, and official persons of several public institutions, used their official position and real influence to unlawfully issue medical opinions and decisions in favour of applicants for rights, thus going around provisions of social protection legislation, the Office adds.

So far, in the course of the procedure, 13 charged persons have entered a plea deal. The principal in the first degree was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for criminal association and bribery.
