Interior Ministry Acting upon Request to Check 19-Year-Old Terrorism Suspect

The Interior Ministry is acting upon a request from Austrian authorities for checking the 19-year-old person with North Macedonia roots suspected of planning a terrorist attack during US singer Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna, which have been cancelled.

“We notify you that the Interior Ministry has received a request to check a person with Macedonian roots suspected of planning a terrorist attack in Vienna. We are taking action over the request,” it said on Thursday.

Police in Austria have arrested two suspects. One of them is the 19-year-old, who’s the prime suspect.

According to some media reports in North Macedonia, his name is Beran Aliji, who has Gostivar roots and whose parents are from North Macedonia. Media around the world, including NBC, quoted Austrian officials as saying the 19-year-old had confessed that he had planned to kill himself and a large number of other people with knives and explosive devices.

Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, the head of Austria’s Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, stated that “the 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots had downloaded manuals for bomb building”, it was added, inter alia, in the NBC report. The Daily Mail, too, reported the suspect had been identified as Beran A.
