“We have decided that way”, PM Hristijan Mickoski said on Monday, asked why North Macedonia was among the countries co-sponsoring the US draft-resolution on Ukraine.
The PM also stated that he expected the text to be supported by the majority at the UN.
Later that day, the UN General Assembly adopted the draft-resolution. However, that took place after amendments had been introduced saying Russia’s committed a military invasion of Ukraine, something the US President Donald Trump administration opposed. As a result, the US abstained. North Macedonia did the same.
There were 71 other abstentions as well, but also 93 and eight votes in favor and against, respectively. The Assembly also adopted the resolution drafted by Ukraine and European countries with the same number of votes. North Macedonia again abstained.
The Foreign Ministry said that the decision shouldn’t be interpreted as a change to hitherto positions.
