One retired and 14 current Customs Administration workers, as well as one police officer, were arrested on Tuesday night in the Strumica-Gevgelija region. Authorities said on Wednesday that Operation Crossing was a result of pre-investigative proceedings that had lasted for multiple months.
During Tuesday’s searches, 50,000 euros, money received as a bribe, were found.
According to the charge, from 21 March to 15 October, 13 of the Administration employees working at the Novo Selo and Dojran customs offices, during checks of goods imported through the Novo Selo and Dojran crossings, would directly ask for and receive from goods transporters money in notes of 20, 50, 70, 100, and 150 euros in exchange for not carrying out checks they would have to carry out.
