On Tuesday, DUI said it was concerned by the armed attack, “by masked persons”, on the carrier of its list of Council seat candidates in Lipkovo, Zekirja Shaini.
“Fortunately, his life is not in danger and he’s getting the required medical care. We fiercely condemn this barbaric act of violence and demand that the Interior Ministry and Public Prosecutor’s Office react immediately, with full transparency and resolve, to identify, arrest, and bring this assassination’s perpetrators to justice. We appeal to all supporters, sympathisers, and citizens in general to remain calm, not to fall for provocations, and to demonstrate the maturity that has always characterised our movement”, Ali Ahmeti’s party said, adding it would not carry out activities that day to express solidarity.
Also, DUI stressed institutions had to take concrete steps to restore public confidence and safety on the ground. VLEN, too, called for calm.
“Violence has no place in society, while no circumstance can justify acts endangering the life and safety of citizens. We appeal to investigative organs to discover the motives and perpetrators of this act, while we call for such cases not to be exploited for political purposes”, it noted.
Condemning the attack, SDSM said Interior Minister Pance Toskovski should resign due to his “fiasco” and “total disintegration of the safety system”.
In response, however, the Minister said he wouldn’t resign, describing accusations by the party as an attempt to cover up the despair and fear of accountability for its “eight-year destruction of the system and institutions”.
