Politicians’ Messages on 122nd Anniversary of Delcev’s Death

On Sunday, the occasion of the 122nd anniversary of Goce Delcev’s death, PM Hristijan Mickoski paid a visit to the revolutionary’s grave at the Church of the Ascension of Jesus in Skopje, where he laid flowers.

“This generation of politicians within the Macedonian government has the honour to convey the memory of his work to coming generations, but also, at the same time, to keep and foster it in a dignified manner. When I say ‘to keep it, to foster it, to convey the truth’, I’m talking about that truth that would really go on, not the non-truth that, unfortunately, some try to distort in the collective memory of the Macedonian people. In the past, there was engineering for that truth to be different. Fortunately, that’s now in the past, while our obligation is to convey the true truth about this great Macedonian titan, Goce Delcev, to future generations”, the PM stated, adding that Delcev’s “struggle for Macedonia, humanity, and work” were timeless.

Flowers were laid also by numerous other politicians, including President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova and SDSM leader Venko Filipce. The former said on social media Delcev had been and would be part “of us, of our history, present, and future”.

The latter stated that Delcev was a reminder of the ancestors’ sacrifice for the Macedonian people to live in its own country in order to be able to have a cultural contest against other peoples. Filipce also called for a return of the essential values promoted by the revolutionary, that is, unity, togetherness, a cultural contest, and building a national identity through progress, “not through isolation and passiveness”.
