Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev has voiced satisfaction with the EP’s adoption of Rapporteur and MEP Thomas Waitz’s Report. As he assessed on Wednesday, the EP didn’t allow to be instrumentalised for the needs of the internal political debate of North Macedonia.
Also, the Minister expressed gratitude to “party leaders in Bulgaria, GERB leader Boyko Borissov, PM Rosen Zhelyazkov, Bulgarian MEPs, representatives of all parties, who, with their efforts, enabled reasonable arguments to be heard”.
His institution, in a press-release, too, reacted, saying that the EP had, with a convincing majority, avoided the involvement of the institution in political instrumentalization attempts by North Macedonia, adding that those attempts aimed at going around obligations stemming from “the so-called European compromise of 2022”.
Borissov voiced a stand, too, stressing that the adoption was a clear sign that when his country was united, results could be achieved and national interest could be defended at the highest level in Europe.
The ex-Bulgarian PM especially thanked the EPP Group (where GERB and VMRO-DPMNE are among the members), as well as his party’s MEP, Andrey Kovatchev.
In addition, Borissov said he was again extending a hand to “our friends in North Macedonia for us to continue together forward, on the basis of respecting and implementing” the Friendship and Good-Neighbourliness Treaty.
“In my face and in that of Bulgaria, they will always have an honest and close partner”, the GERB leader stressed.
