Reactions to Constitutional Court’s Decision in Medreseja Isa Beu Case

DUI has reacted to the Constitutional Court’s decision to abolish the approval for the founding, by the Islamic Religious Community (IRC) of a private secondary school in Kondovo, named “Medreseja Isa Beu”, describing it as scandalous and saying there’d been “humiliating silence from VLEN”.

According to the Court, with the approval, the Government violated the constitutional provision on separation of state from religious matters. However, Ali Ahmeti’s party’s stand is that thousands of young people have been deprived of their right to get an education, which is a result of a decision by VLEN, as part of the ruling structure, to green-light the abolition of the approval issued by the previous cabinet, in March 2024.

“This decision represents a direct attack on religious freedom, on the dignity of the Muslim community, and on a right acquired as a correction of a historic injustice during the previous cabinet’s term. This is not only a legal matter, but also a battle for collective dignity. However, what’s even more difficult than the decision itself is the embarrassing silence of the Albanian representatives within this government”, DUI stressed.

However, VLEN responded by levelling counter-accusations.

“The abolition of Medreseja’s fake accreditation has stemmed from the empty promises of DUI and IRC’s associates. It is precisely Ahmeti and his party that failed to ensure a legal status of the school. This represents a personal defeat of Ali Ahmeti and his clique, which always played with the religious feelings of Albanians only for narrow-party political interests. Today, the truth has surfaced. Medreseja was never accredited lawfully”, VLEN points out.
