Reactions to Results of Albania’s Census Results

According to the results of Albania’s census, the number of Macedonians has more than halved since 2011, that is, that year, their number was around 5,500, while current data show there are 2,281.

For the first time, Bulgarians have appeared as a minority. Over 7,000 people declared Bulgarian in the census.

The Macedonian party, Macedonian Alliance for European Integration, said the increase of the number of Bulgarians at the expense of Macedonians constituted “census genocide” approved by Albania.

North Macedonia’s Foreign Ministry, too, reacted, saying irregularities to which Macedonian associations had reacted had resulted in data that didn’t realistically show the number of ethnic Macedonian.

The Ministry has already called Ambassador Danco Markovski in for consultations to consider the opportunities to correct oversights, but also about advancement of relations with Albania.
