Reactions to Sekerinska’s Appointment as next Deputy NATO Secretary-General

On Tuesday, commenting on her appointment as next Deputy Secretary-General of NATO, former Defence Minister Radmila Sekerinska, during whose term North Macedonia joined the Alliance, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) it would be her privilege to serve.

“I am committed to working with all Allies towards an even stronger and safer Alliance,” she added in the post. On X, US Ambassador Angela Aggeler extended congratulates to her, as well as to PM Hristijan Mickoski and the Government “for championing her candidacy”.

As she added, the appointment is a powerful testament to both Sekerinska’s expertise and experience, as well as to North Macedonia’s role as a valued Ally and US partner.

Ex-PM and former SDSM leader Zoran Zaev, too, praised Sekerinska, saying her appointment acknowledged her professionalism, commitment, and vision for democratic and safe societies, adding that was also “an acknowledgement of all our domestic and international efforts to provide peace, stability, and integration with the modern democratic world”.

Zaev also stated that the appointment was the crown of North Macedonia’s diplomacy and that it proved that North Macedonia was an exceptionally important member of NATO. The current SDSM leader, Venko Filipce welcomed the decision, saying the appointment was yet another strong confirmation of SDSM employing right policies and the “historic success” achieved by the cabinet led by the party.

Sekerinska, who currently serves as Party of European Socialists (PES) Vice-President, will take up her post later this year.
