The Skopje-Sofia relations and EU perspective of the Western Balkans was among the topics discussed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis at their meeting on Tuesday.
Both highlighted their support for integration of the region. Asked about the potential blockade by Greece on Albania’s EU path, the German Chancellor said the next steps should be made regarding Western Balkan countries and their EU integration should follow.
As he added, he has supported those countries over the past years. Scholz doesn’t believe there should be “bilateralisation” of the process that would prevent their integration. He considers that solutions can be found at a European level.
Regarding the Skopje-Sofia relations, Scholz and Mitsotakis hope success can be achieved. According to the Greek Government’s press-release, when it comes to enlargement, especially in terms of the Western Balkans’ perspective, Mitsotakis reiterated his stand that Greece supports integration, but highlighted that it depended on the countries’ progress, especially in terms of the rule of law.
