Before the start of the European Political Community’s meeting, Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez said on Thursday that the EU had to adapt and welcome countries that had been in the lobby for a long time already.
He confirmed a debate on EU reform, too, would be opened at the two-day event in order for enlargement to be enabled from 27 to 35 members. According to Sanchez, Spain, which holds the EU Presidency, is open to and supports enlargement, even though that possibility creates new challenges.
The same day, Sanchez met with Dimitar Kovacevski. North Macedonia’s PM expressed gratitude for Spain’s support for the EU ambitions. Spain’s support will continue to be strong until the final goal of EU membership is achieved, Sanchez said.
