There Can Be no Shortcuts, Commissioner Kos Says at Enlargement Forum

At the Enlargement Forum in Brussels, Commissioner Kos said the acquis needed to be aligned in a qualitative way and implemented effectively. As she underlined, though there’s enlargement momentum, despite current challenges, the process must be credible.

“There can be no shortcuts. I am often asked: ‘Will those geopolitical arguments mean we should turn a blind eye and get new members no matter what?’ No, it is exactly the opposite”, the Enlargement Commissioner added.

Danish FM Bjerre, too, confirmed there was enlargement momentum. Though the topic related to Ukraine, Moldova, Ukraine, and Albania, was prevalent during the discussions in Brussels, when she was asked about what her message to North Macedonia’s citizens was, she noted that the country had to deliver on what had been agreed, i.e. the constitutional changes process.

Greece’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Papadopoulou, answering a reporter’s question, said her country fully supported North Macedonia’s membership candidacy. The Forum is part of the EC’s campaign to raise the process as a common political and societal project.
