Vault Case: Lighter Charge for Mijalkov as Result of Criminal Code Changes

On Friday, the Prosecutor’s Office reclassified the act in the Vault case. Ex-secret police chief Saso Mijalkov is now facing a lighter charge because according to the Article 353 paragraph 4 of the Criminal Code, the prison sentence is 1-5 years.

Prosecutor Trajce Pelivanov said the change was a result of the Criminal Code changes adopted in September. Mijalkov’s lawyer, Ljupco Svrgovski, criticised the developments. In his view, the fact that the charge now concerns an official activity exceeding the bounds of official authorisation is basically a new charge, not reclassification of the act.

The process concerns the procurement of the equipment for communication interception.
