On Wednesday, Parliament adopted the law for ratification of the Skopje-Athens name agreement. 69 parliamentarians voted in favour. VMRO-DPMNE, whose MPs didn’t participate in the session, said it would request interpretation from the Venice Commission to determine the legal nature of the deal. “The deal marks a beginning of the end of the uncertainty for Macedonia and represents a dignified and acceptable solution to the two sides, which confirms the Macedonian language forever,” PM Zoran Zaev said in his address. As he added, the deal opens Macedonia’s gates towards a European future. After the adoption, PS Talat Xhaferi sent the law to President Gjorge Ivanov. According to government spokesperson Mile Bosnjakovski, all political institutions in Macedonia, including Ivanov should display elementary political responsibility when it comes to the moment the country is in. The citizens’ will will be binding for all political stakeholders in Macedonia, he added. The ratification was welcomed by the EU’s Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn. It is the first step of many towards full implementation. I trust all political leaders to show leadership and courage for the next steps, he tweeted. Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov, too, welcomed the ratification on Twitter.
