World Day of Roma People observed at Macedonian Parliament

A special event dedicated to the World Day of Roma People (8 April) was held on Tuesday at the Macedonian Parliament. The main segment of the event was a debate titled “Challenges and perspectives of Roma People in North Macedonia” organised by the association “Romaveritas”, and was attended by the PM Zoran Zaev, the Vice-PM for European Affairs Bujar Osmani and the EU Ambassador to Macedonia Samuel Zbogar. “The government of North Macedonia is strongly dedicated to creation and implementation of policies that will integrate the Roma people in all spheres of society. We have paid special attention to inclusion of these people in labour markets, and providing them with proper healthcare and social services which are their right,” said PM Zaev. Vice-PM Osmani estimated that the Roma people are probably the greatest ethnic group in the world and are present in every country, but added that they are not properly protected and integrated. “As a multi-ethnic society, North Macedonia, by adopting the Ohrid Framework Agreement, initiated mechanisms which provide suitable education and legal representation in society of all ethnicities, including the Roma people,” Osmani said. Ambassador Samuel Zbogar called upon greater activity and awareness about the rights of Roma people.
