Hahn: Delay of EU Talks with North Macedonia may destabilise West Balkans

The EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn says in an interview for the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) that a delay in the processes leading to start of membership negotiations with Macedonia and other countries in the West Balkans may destabilize the entire Balkan region. “Delaying the entire process, i.e. not recognising the progress the West Balkan countries shave made in their processes for integration in EU may result with very severe consequences over the region. I expect that the European Commission (EC) will give a green light for determining a date for start of membership negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania. It is very important now to not drag or delay the procedure for North Macedonia, especially now after they managed to resolve the 30-year long bilateral name dispute with Greece. A negative response to this country’s progress may result with internal destabilisation which may affect the entire Balkan region,” Hahn said for DPA.
