Though she doesn’t expect swift EU integration of the Western Balkans, German Chancellor Angela Merkel highlights that the region has a European perspective. In her video podcast, published on Sunday on the occasion of the upcoming Western Balkans Summit that will be held on Friday within the frameworks of the Berlin Process, she adds that countries from the region should overcome many more obstacles and fulfil many more conditions. According to her, the road is still full of stones. However, the German Chancellor points out that positive examples of dialogue in the region exist, especially highlighting the solution to the name issue. “With political courage, the Prime Ministers of North Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, and of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, managed to resolve that conflict,” Merkel says, adding that the positive example should represent encouragement to resolve problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as between Serbia and Kosovo.
