Parliament Speaker Xhaferi holds Meeting with David Sassoli

On Thursday, Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi held a meeting with European Parliament President David Sassoli, which was attended also by the European Parliament’s Vice-President, Klara Dobrev. The decision not to give a date for a start of negotiations was a mistake, but the support coming from the huge majority of MEPs will continue in the future, according to Sassoli. In that regard, the European Parliament President’s visit to Skopje at the start of November was mentioned. At the meeting, Xhaferi thanked the European Parliament for the continued strong support for the enlargement process and for the support for Macedonia to unconditionally start membership negotiations. The same day, Xhaferi had also met MEPs David McAllister, Andreas Schieder, Tanja Fajon and Ilhan Kyuchyuk. At those meetings, too, he received strong support for Macedonia’s European perspective. Xhaferi’s activities in Strasbourg included also an address at the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament on the topic “Our Common European Home: the next 70 years”. The European Conference of Presidents of Parliament brings together Speakers and Presidents of the parliaments of the 47 member States of the Council of Europe; of parliaments enjoying observer and partner for democracy status with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and of international parliamentary assemblies. The parliaments of central Asian and Maghreb countries are also associated.
