Reuters: EU to Start Macedonia and Albania Negotiations This Week

Reuters, citing its latest sources, reports that a unanimous decision has been reached to begin membership negotiations with Skopje and Tirana. “The EU will start accession negotiations with Albania and Macedonia according to the draft unanimous decision by the 27 member states which should be finalized this week,” Reuters reports. Last week, the latest ambassadorial meeting yielded positive results, however there remained an unresolved issue between Greece and Albania. The diplomats in Brussels are optimistic that the issue can be resolved and that a positive decision can be made this week, though no one wants to rush to conclusions until the decision is formalized. Procedures remain unknown, such as the format of the foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Tuesday and the approval process, without the physical presence of the ministers, should the decision be positive.
