Varhelyi: Political Will Needed for Resolution of Skopje-Sofia Bilateral Issues

Commissioner for Enlargement at the European Commission (EC) Oliver Varhelyi said that Macedonia should make stronger efforts to meet the concerns of Bulgaria so that both sides can find a mutually acceptable solution for the bilateral disputes between them. As Varhelyi said, this is a matter of “political will, engagement and decisiveness”, and said that the EC is ready to provide assistance for finding a solution for the bilateral disputes between Skopje and Sofia. “I still hope that we will start the membership negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania by the end of 2020, but the chances for that are becoming smaller. This also poses a risk for showing EU as non-credible and making promises that it cannot keep to countries intending to become member-states,” Varhelyi said.
