Fouere: EU Has Instruments at Disposal

Former Ambassador of the European Union to the country, Erwan Fouere, called on the European Union to get involved in resolving the Macedonian-Bulgarian dispute, because otherwise he thinks that the country might get stuck in this situation for some time. “I think that the elections in Bulgaria, unfortunately, will not bring anything new, so there is no point in EU waiting to act. The European institutions need to be more inventive in their approach. They have instruments to use, like mediation, with a greater focus on the study of history. Many, many instruments can be used without blocking the start of negotiations,” Fouere said in an interview with Telma. “The government of North Macedonia should continue with the necessary reforms required, especially in the area of justice and the fight against corruption, because that is the best argument to show that it is ready for the obligations of EU membership,” he adds.
